Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Find answers to common questions about starting therapy, scheduling, insurance, and more
How do I get started?
Getting started is simple. Complete our new client inquiry form and tell us a little about what you’re looking for. A member of our team will review your information and reach out to discuss therapist availability and next steps.
Do you accept insurance and what are your rates?
We accept the following insurances which vary by individual therapist: Anthem/BlueCross BlueShield, Carefirst, United, Aetna, & Cigna. Our direct pay rate is $150 per individual session or $125 for pre-licensed therapist, and $175 for marriage counseling.
What if my therapist doesn’t accept my insurance?
You may still be able to use out-of-network benefits if they’re included in your insurance plan. We can provide a superbill that you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.
Reimbursement depends on your individual plan and is not guaranteed, so we recommend checking with your insurance provider about your out-of-network mental health benefits.
What is direct pay?
Direct pay means you pay the session fee directly rather than using an in-network insurance benefit. Some clients choose direct pay because their therapist isn’t in-network with their insurance, they don’t have mental health coverage, or they prefer not to use insurance for therapy.
How do I know which therapist is right for me?
Finding the right therapist is an important part of the counseling process. Our therapists have different backgrounds, specialties, and approaches to therapy. Visit our Our Therapists page to learn more about each clinician and find someone who feels like a good fit for you. If you’re unsure where to start, reach out to us and we can help guide you based on what you’re looking for.
What should I expect during my first session?
Your first session is an opportunity for you and your therapist to get to know one another. You’ll talk about what brought you to therapy, relevant background information, current concerns, and what you hope to gain from counseling.
Together, you and your therapist will begin identifying goals and discussing what therapy may look like moving forward.
How often will I attend therapy?
Every client’s needs are different. Many clients begin with weekly sessions to establish a strong therapeutic relationship and build momentum toward their goals.
As therapy progresses, you and your therapist can discuss the frequency that best fits your needs.
Do you offer in-person and virtual therapy?
Yes. Haymarket Counseling offers both in-person and virtual therapy, although availability varies by therapist.
Our Therapists page includes each clinician’s current session options so you can find the arrangement that works best for you.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes. Protecting your privacy is an important part of the therapeutic relationship. Information discussed in therapy is generally confidential, with certain legal and ethical exceptions. Your therapist will review confidentiality, including its limits, with you as part of the informed-consent process.
